The 10% Difference
28 Apr 2008
As a real estate investor I am always looking for a deal. The latest one came in the form of 10%. What kind of a difference would you see in your bank balance if you got an extra ten percent interest? Your scale would show the difference if your workout was ten percent longer or you ate ten percent less. When I go to the store and see that they will give me a discount of ten percent I will take it but I don’t get too excited about it. Perhaps I am jaded or expect too much but just ten percent doesn’t do too much for me.
That small amount took on a new meaning when I heard Don R. Campbell, President of The Real Estate Investment Network told me that “all it takes to be successful is doing the extra 10% that others aren’t willing to do.” Just ten percent? That’s all? I can do that!
Practically speaking an extra six minutes added to my hour long workout would mean success for me. Even the certified exercise hater that I am could hang in there for that long. It would only take an extra twelve minutes for me to actually see the basement floor while I am working on it. It would be a small sacrifice if it meant I would be able to see the floor again. By adding just a few minutes to the time spent striving for a goal I can gain greater results in less time in the long run.
It reminds me of when my daughters were young. They dragged out the time it took to clean up after dinner until it was almost time for the next meal. I tried to make them understand that if they just focused and got it done it would take them a fraction of the time they were taking. That was met with a puzzled look as if I was actually speaking a language unknown to them. Any mother will tell you that her advice is only appreciated in later life. We learn our lessons at different times and speeds but hopefully as adults we can grasp ideas like this and make them work for us. If it only takes ten percent more than what I am doing to see success in any given endeavour you have to know it will be worth it and the beauty of it is that it can be applied to anything I choose to pursue. Do I want to be a better dancer, a better reader a better student? There isn’t an area that it would enhance.
Ten percent more of my money going to those in need would make a great difference in their lives. The same amount that doesn’t make me blink as a discount at the store would make a substantial difference to them. It wouldn’t take a lot to see ten percent more money for heart disease research or ten percent more literate children. Be willing to put in the extra ten percent in any area of your life and watch the growth. Only ten percent? Even I can do that!
